Still, the Crichton formula is a sturdy one, following the model of Westworld and Jurassic Park by involving a small band of adventurers in a fantastical realm of danger and death. In this case, a group of archaeologists and combat experts (led by Paul Walker and Frances O'Connor) use a "3-D fax machine" (so much for technobabble!) to time-travel back to France in 1357, in hopes of retrieving Walker's father (Billy Connolly) and returning safely to the present. No such luck! Fending for themselves against marauding hordes of medieval French warriors at war with the invading British, these semi-intrepid travelers find their body count rising, and the deadline for their return home is rapidly approaching. All well and good, so far, and the castles-and-crossbows action reaches a fever pitch, but it's obvious that Donner's too lazy to make the much better film that this could and should have been. Absu! rdly fun ny scenes include the family pig crashing and demolishing a fancy outdoor wedding; James' party-loving mother (Arnetia Walker) scrambling to live up to her son's uptight image of her as a fragile, elderly woman; James breaking into a local sorority house and hiding under a bed in hopes of protecting Melanie's innocence, and James' and Melanie's unexpected skydive into Washington, D.C., in order to keep Melanie's interview appointment at Georgetown. Shauna Macdonald returns as the sole survivor of an expedition that turned fatal after its team of all-female spelunkers encountered a race of monsters in a remote Appalachian cave; unable to prove her story, she's sent by the local authorities back into the cavern with a team of experts, with predictably bloody results. Unfortunately, blood is apparently the sole focus of director Jon Harris, who edited the original Descent (as well as Kick-Ass); what's missing are Marshall's strong charac! ters, which made their demise all the more meaningful and harr! owing, a nd his emphasis on suspense over special effects (Marshall is credited as executive producer on Descent 2). Those wishing to see more of the "crawlers," the blind, humanoid antagonists in both films, will get plenty of views here, but bringing them into the light, as it were, doesn't make them more frightening. Instead, viewers become more aware of their artifice, which also goes for their suspiciously papier-mâché-like environs. The widescreen DVD includes some interesting extras that illustrate the producers' intentions with the film; Harris, Macdonald, and two of the newer cast members provide a lively commentary, while a 25-minute making-of featurette gives glimpses of the film's production design. A battery of deleted scenes offer character nuances that might have benefited the film had they been left in, and a storyboard gallery is an improvement over the murky sets. --Paul GaitaThis is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality.
